Our History

The Early Days

Two plots located in a thick forest at West Fijai were acquired by the Directors Mr & Mrs Edward Prah in 1987. At the time, a firm decision had not been taken regarding the usage of the plots. Initial thoughts were to put up a two-storey residential facility on one of the plots which would house a family on one floor and a day care facility on the ground floor.

The second plot was to be left as a playground for the children. Filled with passion for children and the desire to improve lives of young people, Mrs Prah was convinced by the nuclear family to build a continuation school for children of the day care center.

The Inception

In 1995, the family decided to set funds aside from family income to construct the facility. In December 1999, the ground floor was constructed. The family casually proposed that the school should start in September 2000. That was a challenge. However, logistics were acquired and arrangements were made to open the school.

The pioneer staff were Mrs Elizabeth Hawkson, the headmistress and Kwamena Acquah, a labourer. They were later joined by Ms Yeboaba Turkson as a supporting teacher and few months later Louisa Avumadoh (Appiah) also joined the staff. Louisa has served at the pre-school department as the longest and only pioneer member staff.

The first pupil was Whitney Cann registered in August 2000 who is currently studying medicine in the University in China. On the 12th of September, 2000 the school opened its doors to the community. Initial enrolment was 7 pupils in a one stream school.

Reaching Greater Heights

Due to the quality of education and success results of the school, admission applications flooded in over the years. The family therefore made a decision to start a two (2) stream school. They therefore acquired eight (8) more plots in the Fijai community not far from the main school in 2003 and started construction in 2013. On 10th October 2016, the ground floor of the Annex was opened to the Junior High School students to enable the commencement of a two (2) stream from the pre-school level.

Greater Heights School Ltd today has an enrollment of 567 pupils and students. Like the Biblical mustard seed, school enrollment, infrastructure, staffing, administrative structures and others have seen remarkable growth and development.
